In a crowded saloon in Dewford Town, Gunner slid onto a stool at the bar next to the most recent Elite Four. For once, they were not meeting for work; no high-profile figures needed protecting, and no city needed defending from a Pokémon attack. [break][break]

No, the agent had invited his acquaintance to grab some drinks and bar food. To chat, catch up, and perhaps get some advice. [break][break]

The bartender came over to take their orders. Not intending to get drunk, Gunner opted for a beer on tap.

All of them, every human in this region, is caught between the balancing scales. A tip is inevitable. When that happens, he feels there won’t be any occasion to drink in honky tonks with work buddies.[break][break]
But here, in the present, they have a moment. His voice is haggard when he speaks. Only the dim, ambient neon of the saloon masks the dark bags under his eyes. When the barman asks for his order, Navy gets mead.[break][break]
It is, after all, the drink of warriors. Greyson Connors must be making a fortune off of him.[break][break]

Gunner sipped his beer, its bitter coldness a balm for a parched throat. "A bit of this, a bit of that. I was on leave for a while earlier this year, after Kyurem's attack. A Pokémon attack hit me pretty hard in the back, so the doctor ordered bedrest." [break][break]

How frustrated he had been, then, to be confined to GIDEON GRAVES's apartment instead of working. Ultimately, the forced recovery had been good for him. He'd fully healed and was back to work, like he'd wanted. [break][break]

"Recently, I've been helping with the operations in the Giant Chasm. I'm… not sure about Paxton, though. We haven't worked a mission together since the Icelands." [break][break]

A troubled look stole across Gunner's face for a moment before it disappeared behind a longer swig. [break][break]

"What about you?" He peered sidelong at Navy. "You look like you could use a vacation. Have you been sleeping at all?"

“Goode didn’t tell me I wouldn’t have time to work on my truck or I wouldn’t have taken the gig!” Another drink of mead, beating his own fatigue down with mirth.

Shaking his head in wonder, Gunner winced at the long list of Navy's responsibilities. "Gym challenges and Elite Four matches? Isn't it that you're supposed to give up the more local role when you get promoted to the regional level?" [break][break]

Not that Navy was the first to juggle both titles. Gunner simply couldn't imagine doing it himself, if he'd been the one the Commissioner had asked instead. [break][break]

He had other obligations, anyway. [break][break]

"I heard about the Toxic Chain reports. It sounds like it's spreading quickly all over the region. The presence of Poison-type Pokémon, too." Leaning back in his chair, Gunner crossed his arms over his chest, looking troubled again. "Do we have any idea what could be behind all of it?" [break][break]

He recalled a report he'd read last autumn about some Megalopolans in the swamps, but for some reason, that seemed like the incorrect conclusion.

His brain, he realized in the long ago battle of Dewford, was meant for warcraft instead of mysteries. Mysteries are for better men and women to solve. Leave cracking the code of the universe to Eva Morales or kyle lopez. He’ll fight the battle when the battle must be joined, feast when it is done, and finally be afforded rest.[break][break]
“Baki and Tom say it’s those alien bastards. After all the stunts they pulled, wouldn’t put anything past them. There’s only one Pokemon I know ‘bout that can spread that much poison…” It all comes back to Eternatus for him. Like a fish, he is so concerned with his ecosystem that he will not notice the shining hook until it is too late.[break][break]
“I’m sure Goode and the gang’ll figure it out, then we can work together on the op to figure it out. Kick some ass. Get a two hour nap.” Navy takes another drink. The fire in the mead burns just right on the way down.

Gunner and Navy were cut from the same cloth: warriors, soldiers, people whose job it was to carry out orders someone higher up the chain of command had given them. Men like them were few and far between, the agent thought. The average person couldn't stomach the hard choices their bosses often had to make, let alone live with them forever. [break][break]

"You think we'll get to work together on the op?" The notion brought a smile to Gunner's lips. "Like when we teamed up to defend Dewford against Kyogre, huh?" [break][break]

He flashed back to that autumn day when a thunderstorm beat down upon them on the pier. The ocean had swelled with so much fury that it sought to snatch them from the land itself. But their Pokémon had triumphed over the leviathan, theirs and… [break][break]

Gunner took another swig of beer. He wanted to broach this topic, but he didn't know how.

Talk of battles past and battles to come makes him grin ear to ear, painting him as a younger man for the breadth of the smile.[break][break]
He misses paxton concordas. Operations in Area Zero serve as a reminder to Dewford’s sheriff that the agent is a warrior as well, not some distant pencil pusher.[break][break]

Gunner shook his head with more vehemence than he intended. "Hell no. I'm not a leader type. I'm much better at carrying out orders while people more capable than me make the big picture decisions," he said. [break][break]

He paused, then added with some reluctance, "Paxton's probably the same as me in that way. He served in the Kanto Army, did you know? A proper soldier." [break][break]

Gunner, on the other hand, had just been an analyst sitting behind a desk in a foreign country. Days before war, he and his team had been evacuated out of Hoenn. Unlike Paxton, Gunner hadn't had to live through the waking nightmare; all he'd seen were photos and video footage. [break][break]

"Hey Navidson, can I ask you something?" The blonde man scratched at the stubble on his chin. "Have you ever been in a situation where you know deep in your gut you were wrong to do something, but you don't know what to do about it?"

The question pierces him like an arrow, like the stray shot that murders a king. Navy’s eyes flick away, busying themselves with the technicolor broadcast of a distant Galarian battle. It numbs the pain that comes from thinking about that question, digging up old dirt best left undisturbed.[break][break]
“…yeah.” He says after a pause. “Made plenty of mistakes like that. Most of ‘em with the dead.”[break][break]
Dead, he thinks as an Inteleon dynamaxes in the Motostoke arena, or lost forever.[break][break]
“If they weren’t…I’d probably have some awkward conversations with ‘em. Stumble through it like an idiot. It’s better to look like a moron than let something kill you inside.” And another fiery wash of mead goes into his chest, to burn the things there that will never die.

Somehow, the fact that Navy wrestled with the same question reassured Gunner. At least on the outside, men like them weren't allowed to make mistakes. Doing so invited too much risk. Yet they were also only human, as foolish and prone to misjudgments as the rest. [break][break]

Navy's answer made sense, too, as difficult as it was for Gunner to swallow his pride. He tried not to make regretting his life choices into a habit, especially considering what he did for work. Even admitting he'd been wrong, even in vague terms, had tasted like a bitter pill. [break][break]

"Yeah. I guess it is." Gunner sighed and took another sip. "It's about Paxton. Outside of missions, we haven't been talking. I got pissed off at him a while ago, and, uh… I punched him in the face." [break][break]

The memory twisted his expression into a grimace. "I know I shouldn't have, but in the moment…" He shook his head. "I don't know. Everything went red."

“…my best friend is dead.” The words are stated without tone or emotion. “Died in a battle that almost killed Paxton. Died doing the right thing.”[break][break]
His eyes fall to the honey wine. Gold swirls in his cup. It reflects his own face, filled with regret. Gunner makes him think about all the things he’d want to say, if he could – things that will never get to be said. That’s what comes of thinking everyone is invincible. The sole ornament on the hat is a rainbow feather, a reminder of a friend now gone.[break][break]
“It sounds like you care about Paxton, man. Is…is that how you’d wanna end things? That could’ve been the last real memory you guys had of each other.” A hint of his grief, old scars numbed by Galarian time, leaks through.[break][break]
“Talk to him. Even if it sucks. Arceus knows guys like us are bad at talking about feelings.”

Navy did not have to speak a name for Gunner to know who was dead. kyle lopez had perished on Mt. Chimney during an operation kept so confidential that not even the agent had known about it. But paxton concordas had been part of it. Though he'd returned alive, there had been no guarantee of his survival. [break][break]

That was the truth of their oath to protect Hoenn. Gunner was prepared to lay down his life for the defense of the region, like Paxton was. [break][break]

Like Kyle had. [break][break]

Their petty squabbles were so, so stupid. [break][break]

"I know." Gunner sighed but nodded. "I know." [break][break]

He downed half of his beer in the next couple of gulps, wishing he had something stronger. Then he glanced sidelong at the man seated next to him. [break][break]

"How are you holding up?"
